Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful vehicle for political activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially aware and taught her how to utilize the arts as a way of expression. While DuVernay was raised within Compton with her parents, she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood, California. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the trash of one of members of the jury. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was hired right out of college as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. In this role, she launched her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company launched a number of promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
